Adjunct Faculty in Graphic Design
Part Time, Temporary
2013-2014

The Visual Cultures Program in the Department of the Arts at The American University (AUC) in Cairo is now accepting applications from Graphic Artists, to teach classes across our new major in graphic design including: Digital Practices, Web design, Animation, Design Studio, Illustration, Graphic Design History, Typography (Arabic and Latin), Color, Design Theory.

Function of Position:

Adjunct faculty members report to the Director of the Program and the adjunct coordinator for their discipline. Adjunct faculty teaches department courses and evaluates student performance per guidelines set by the American University in Cairo.

Adjunct faculty is responsible for preparing lesson plans, creating appropriate teaching aids, and providing students with instructional materials and activities during class. Adjunct faculty must maintain accurate records on students and submit pertinent data to the department, including, but not limited to, attendance information, course information sheet, final exams, and final grades.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Individual must have the ability to teach a variety of graphic design courses involving typography and raster and vector graphics.
• Provides students with appropriate guidance and expertise in assigned subjects.
• Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of subject.
• Encourages students’ participation in class activities. 
• Identifies learning objectives and evaluates student performance based on objectives.
• Prepares course syllabi and outlines.
• Establishes and maintains an organized and disciplined classroom environment.
• Performs classroom set up in a timely manner; arrives prior to class start, maintains an active presence, and provides active classroom instruction for the entire class period.
• Provides students with assistance and guidance.
• Adheres to all college and department policies.
• Provides timely submission of all required paperwork/information as required by the department and the American University in Cairo

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Graphic Design, and /or 5-10 years experience in the design industry.
• Digital portfolio of personal and professional work and student work if available. 
• Solid understanding of the current Macintosh OS and Adobe software: InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop.
• Sound understanding of multi lingual typography and design history.
• Evidence of effective communication skills.
• Commitment to supporting an inclusive teaching environment, with respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs; while maintaining appropriate academic standards.
